BERENGRAVE Local Nature Reserve - Where history and nature come together

How to get there

How to get to BERENGRAVE LNR

BY TRAIN to Rainham (Kent) and walk:

·       On leaving Rainham station walk to the main road (Station Road) and turn left

·       After about 200m turn left into Childscroft Road

·       Turn first right into Chalky Bank Road

·       Continue to the end of Chalky Bank Road

·       Turn right into Berengrave Lane

·       There is an entrance to the reserve about 30m on your right
This is about a 10-15 minute walk

BY CAR via M2 Motorway:

·       Take M2 to junction 4. Follow signs for GILLINGHAM

·       Go straight across the first two roundabouts

·       At the third roundabout, (traffic light controlled and big Tesco water tower on the right), turn right onto the A2. (RAINHAM - SITTINGBOURNE)

·       After about 1km you will go under a footbridge and come to a set of traffic lights

·       Go straight across these lights and then take the second turning on the left. (Just before the next set of traffic lights)

·       This road (Birling Avenue) will turn sharp right after only about 10m then, after passing the library and the old police station on the left, it will turn sharp left and become Berengrave Lane

·       Continue down Berengrave Lane and under the railway bridge. (Traffic lights here)

·       Go past Childscroft Road on your right, then Chalky Bank Road on your right

·       After a few more metres you will see a lay-by on the right

·       The entrance to the reserve is just to the left of the lay-by

BY CAR via A2:

From West (London):

·       Follow A2 until approaching junction with M2. (Note: DO NOT continue onto the M2)

·       Keep to left hand lane, following signs for GRAIN and GILLINGHAM.  Join dual carriageway (A289)

·       At first roundabout, take second exit, following signs for GILLINGHAM

·       At second roundabout, take first exit, following signs for GILLINGHAM

·       At third roundabout, take first exit, following signs for GILLINGHAM and TUNNEL.

·       Go through tunnel under river, continue in a straight line, following signs for RAINHAM and M2

·       The next roundabout (controlled by about 30 traffic lights!) is a strange one in that the main road goes straight through the middle of it. Follow the main road straight across.

·       Go straight across the next roundabout. (By the gas works)

·       Take the first exit at next roundabout, following sign for LOWER RAINHAM (B2004)

·       Continue along this (country) road, through one set of traffic lights, until you come to a chicane

·       Just past the chicane you will come to a junction with a Murco garage on the right and traffic lights just beyond

·       Go through the traffic lights and immediately turn across the road into a small lay-by

·       The entrance to the chalk pit area of the reserve is on the lay-by. For the entrance to the Rainham Dock East part of the reserve, walk back through the traffic lights and, once you have cleared the bridge, cross the road and you will find the entrance

From East (Dover, Canterbury, etc.):

·       Follow A2 to Rainham.

·       Turn right at the first set of traffic lights into Otterham Quay Lane

·       At the mini roundabout, by The Three Sisters public house, turn left into Lower Rainham Road

·       At the next mini roundabout, take the second exit, continuing on the Lower Rainham Road

·       Immediately before the next set of traffic lights, pull in to lay-by

·       The entrance to the chalk pit area of the reserve is on the lay-by. For the entrance to the Rainham Dock East part of the reserve, walk through the traffic lights and, once you have cleared the bridge, cross the road and you will find the entrance
